Understanding the benefits to Kingsport Kingdom Center

Active Environments are places that naturally encourage physical activity, like parks, walking trails, and bike lanes. Social Infrastructure includes the places and services that bring people together, like schools, libraries, and community centers. Designing the built environment to include these spaces is important because they make it easier for people to connect and support each other – which is vital for community health.

Creating active environments that combine accessible physical spaces with strong social infrastructure can encourage us all to make healthier choices and be more active. This is a key step in tackling issues like obesity or mental well-being and making our communities healthier for everyone.

Tn places a strong emphasis on active environments.

The Department of Health explains this along with other solutions and a fact sheet here Active Environments

Clogging originated in the Appalachian Mountains as a mountain man's folk dance. Each Saturday and Sunday, people would gather and fellowship while a few musically talented individuals picked and played bluegrass music. While this took place, folks would dance a mountain folk dance known as clog dance.

The roots of this quick step dance come from Irish step dancing (as seen in River Dance) and Holland's wooden shoe dance. Traditionally, Clogger's maintained a stiff upper body and danced to bluegrass music. As contemporary clogging has emerged and evolved, forms of dance are being incorporated and a variety of music is used.

It's rumored that the Morris Shakers of Europe didn't allow women to clog. Today, people of all ages and gender enjoy clogging around the world."

Back in the 1700's Appalachia was a melting pot for settlers from several locations, England, Ireland, Scotland, Germany and more. These settlers each brought pieces of their unique culture and this included dance.2

As they danced together and their styles blended together, Clogging was born and has constantly evolved from its traditional roots and now encompasses all genres of music, many different elements of dance, and people of all backgrounds.
